This voyage has an offshore passage around the Stadt headland which is potentially challenging and notoriously rough. Otherwise this is day sailing in waters that vary from narrow wooded channels to huge open fjords with time to have a wander ashore and potter in fantastic scenery.
Alesund
Alesund was destroyed by fire in 1904 and rebuilt in the art nouveau style. Constrained on a narrow peninsula with a backdrop of massive snow capped mountains it's very much a working sea town, but with lots of lovely buildings to wander amongst.
Highlights along the way
First of all we sail, round the Stadt headland and then hopefully visit the island of Silde, one of our all time favourite places. After that we sail past Maloy where the Tall Ships Races (2008 tall ships races article) were held in 2008 and enter and area of dramatic cliffs and fjords. We might visit Eivindvik where the vikings had their parliament.
Sheltered anchorages and places to moor up abound. Just before Bergen we enter a slightly more populated area with pretty wooded, narrow waterways and some more open areas before we enter the Bergen fjord.
Bergen
Its worth having a day in Bergen if you have time. It's a compact city with several good museums and some very pretty historic areas to walk around. If the weather is nice a ride up the funicular gives you spectacular views of the city below and surrounding fjords and islands right out to sea. You can also hike out further above Bergen. The top photo on this page was taken last year about an hours walk from the funicular.
